The 30 days off test every owner should take

Max Snitkovsky, M&A Advisor at Iconic, walks through a simple test that shows how much your business depends on you, in under a minute.

For how to run the test step by step and hand off the first task, read the article The 30 days off test: what would break if you left your business?

Transcript

If you disappeared for 30 days starting tomorrow, what would break first in your business?

Would sales stop because every client relationship runs through you? Would payroll be late because you're the only one who knows how to run it? Would your team freeze up because every decision waits on you?

Whatever you just pictured breaking, that's what a buyer sees as risk. And risk lowers your price.

When I owned my senior care business, I wore lots of hats. And every one of those hats is something that a buyer has to replace.

Buyers call this owner dependency. The more a business depends on its owner, the less it's actually worth.

So here's something you can do this week. Pick the one thing that would break first and write down how you'd fix it. Then hand it to someone on your team and let them run it while you watch.

If you want to see where else you stand, comment READY, and I'll send you my exit readiness checklist.
